Because Armenia is not a member of the European Union, it has no representative in the European Council. Its Prime Minister is Nikol P’ashinyan of the centrist Civil Contract party, which sits with the centre-right EPP/CD, the centre-left SOC, and the liberal ALDE bloc in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Civil Contract generally favours integration with the European Union.
In contrast, several major opposition alliances are more sceptical of closer EU integration. The newly formed right-wing Strong Armenia (UH+) multiparty alliance is led by billionaire Samvel Sargsi Karapetyan.
The multiparty alliance Armenia Alliance (HD), which has a similar ideological profile, is led by former President and billionaire Robert Sedraki K’voch’aryan. It is also home to the HYD party, which is an observer member of the centre-left Party of European Socialists.
