Election Dashboard: National parliament election in Cyprus 2026

The Varieties of Democracy project classifies Cyprus as a liberal democracy, meaning that elections are generally free and fair.

Cyprus’ national parliamentary elections in 2026 have no direct impact on representation in the European Council, because Cyprus is represented there by its President, who is elected separately in a direct presidential election. As a result, the parliamentary contest is primarily about domestic governing power rather than EU-level leadership.

On the centre-right, the Democratic Rally (Democratic Rally (DISY)) remains one of the dominant governing parties in recent cycles. DISY is a liberal-conservative formation and is affiliated with the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) bloc of Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber.

The largest force in Cypriot politics is, alongside DISY, the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL), a left-wing party rooted in trade-union and communist traditions. AKEL is aligned at the European level with the The Left in the European Parliament.

The Democratic Party (Democratic Party (DIKO)) is affiliated with the centre-left S&D family on the European level. Similarly, the Movement for Social Democracy (EDEK) is a social-democratic party located on the centre-left, aligned with the Party of European Socialists (PES/S&D family).

On the right, the National Popular Front (ELAM) is aligned with the national-conservative European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) family. ELAM’s platform is characterised by strong anti-immigration rhetoric and cultural conservatism.

ALMA – Citizens for Cyprus is a centrist party affiliated with the European Democratic Party on the European level, which sits with the Renew Europe group.

DIPA (Democratic Alignment) is a liberal party, generally pro-European and part of the ALDE Party on the European level, which generally sits with Renew Europe.

Volt Cyprus has emerged as part of the transnational Volt Europa movement, which is linked to the Greens/EFA Group in the EU Parliament. Similarly, The Cypriot Greens (Cyprus Greens–Citizens Cooperation) represent the environmentalist bloc and are aligned with the European Green Party (Greens/EFA family).

KEKK (Active Citizens – Movement of Cypriot United Hunters) is a green-conservative party without international partners.

ADK is an ideologically weakly defined party. Its founder Fidias Panayiotou sits with the Non-Inscrits in the European Parliament, being the first MEP to be elected as an independent candidate.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. local time (EEST) to noon, and from 1 p.m. local time to 6 p.m. on election day (24 May 2026). 568,587 eligible voters are set to elect 56 seats elected by Greek Cyriots. 24 seats of de jure designated to Turkish Cyriots have remained vacant since 1964.
